STAUNTON, Va. —  An Augusta County deputy is recovering from minor injuries following a hit-and-run involving an 18-wheeler Sunday night.

According to Sheriff Donald Smith, the deputy was traveling on Interstate 81 near mile marker 220 when he entered a V-DOT work zone. Smith said that the deputy was driving normally with no lights or sirens on when a tractor-trailer slammed into the back of his cruiser, forcing the vehicle into the back of a V-DOT work truck.

Workers on scene reportedly helped the deputy who was unable to radio for help because of the severe damage to his vehicle. He was taken to Augusta Health for treatment of what Smith calls minor injuries.

Meanwhile, the tractor-trailer sped away northbound on I-81.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Virginia State Police.
