The cost of an education at one of Virginia’s 23 community colleges could rise by nearly five percent for some students by this fall.

Wytheville Community College announced yesterday that the State Board for Community Colleges will consider hiking rates to pay for an increasing cost of operating during its annual meeting in July.

If rates are hiked by the proposed maximum of 4-point-7 percent, calculations that average tuition costs could increase by 217 dollars per student.

The average tuition cost for in-state residents to attend Blue Ridge Community College is roughly a third of the price tag at the University of Virginia.
