Dukes Softball loses series finale at Marshall, 8-4

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – James Madison softball fell short of the series against Marshall as the Dukes dropped an 8-4 game on Sunday at Dot Hicks Field.

The Dukes fell to 24-16 with a 9-9 mark in Sun Belt play, while the Thundering Herd advanced to 38-7, sitting at 13-3 in league competition.

Freshman Kylah Berry worked six innings in the circle for JMU where she noted three strikeouts, yielded four walks, and allowed ten hits.

Freshman KK Mathis led the offense with two hits, two RBI’s, and one run scored, while graduate student Hallie Hall added two hits and scored one run in the loss.

Graduate students Hannah Shifflett and Avery Pinder, sophomore Abbie Campbell, and freshman Bella Henzler each tallied a hit.

How It Happened:
• Marshall scored first in the bottom of the first inning due to a JMU throwing error.

• Mathis tied the game at one run after she singled in the top of the third to score redshirt junior Reed Butler.

• The Thundering Herd regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning from an RBI ground out.

• In the top of the fourth, sophomore Abbie Campbell reached on an infield single and plated Hallie Hall to tie the game at 2.

• Shifflett slammed a solo shot in the top of the fifth to give the Dukes a 3-2 lead.

• Down 3-2, Marshall produced six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-run home run, RBI single, and a three-run home run to left field.

• Mathis slugged a solo shot in the top of the seventh to keep JMU’s hopes alive, but the Dukes could not complete the comeback.

The Dukes return home for a weekend series against App State on April 28-30 at Veterans Memorial Park, with the opener scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday, April 28.
