Last month, Harrisonburg City Council gave the go-ahead to build Fire Station Number five in the north end of the city.

Last night, Harrisonburg Fire Chief Matt Tobia presented to council the timeline for construction and staff for the new station.

Tobia says construction will take about two years and the goal is for the station to be open in January of 2024.

However, he added that personnel should be in place before the new station opens.

City Council voted to allow Chief Tobia to apply for one of 500 grants from the Department of Homeland Security that total 560 million dollars that will pay the salaries of 15 firefighters that Tobia says are needed to staff the station for over three years.
