Two James Madison lacrosse student-athletes earned All-America honors from the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) on Thursday.
JMU defender Mairead Durkin was named Second Team All-American while attacker Isabella Peterson was named to the Third Team.
Durkin’s All-American nod comes after a career season on defense for the Dukes. She broke a single-season program record with 52 caused turnovers and picked up a team-leading 45 ground balls. Her strong defensive play was exemplified by a record-setting eight caused turnovers and seven ground balls against UConn in the NCAA Tournament First Round on May 13.
The CAA Defensive Player of the Year helped JMU allow just 9.47 goals per game for the 11th-best scoring defense in the country.
Peterson established herself as one of the most dominant offensive threats in the country, scoring 72 goals, third-most in program history and top-10 in the country. She had at least five goals in eight games and shot .537, tied for the 36th-best shooting percentage in the nation. Like Durkin, Peterson had a record-setting performance in a single game this season, tying JMU records with eight goals and 10 points on April 2 at Hofstra.
In addition to scoring among the tops in the country, the redshirt sophomore also secured possessions for JMU with 102 draw controls, third-most in a season in program history. She set a career-high with nine against Virginia Tech on Feb. 16.
Both Durkin and Peterson completed sweeps of All-American honors in 2022, as both were also named All-Americans by media outlets USA Lacrosse Magazine and ILWomen.
The duo finished the season among the top 10 in JMU’s career records, as Peterson currently ranks seventh in program history with 150 career draw controls and 10th with 132 career goals while Durkin is tied for seventh with 88 caused turnovers.
The Dukes, last ranked No. 10 by the IWLCA on May 9, finished the season at 14-5 and made a seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.
