(Undated) – On the day before their 49th wedding anniversary, Evelyn Burner made a rather unusual call to her husband, Irvin.
“Honey, I took $20 and I bought two lottery tickets,” the Mt. Jackson woman began.
“So why are you calling me?” he said.
“I think I won $1 million,” she replied.
She was right. Her 20X the Money ticket was a top prize winner. The other ticket she bought just happened to be a winner too. It won $10. Ms. Burner had a choice of taking the full $1 million prize over 30 years or a one-time cash option of $657,030 before taxes. She chose the cash option.
She bought both tickets at the 7-Eleven at 10935 North Valley Pike in Broadway. The store receives a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
20X the Money (Game #1781) is one of dozens of Scratcher games available from the Virginia Lottery. It features prizes ranging from $10 to $1 million. The chances of winning the $1 million top prize in this game are 1 in 1,162,800. The chances of winning any prize in this game are 1 in 3.52.
Ms. Burner, who is a nurse, said she has no immediate plans for the winnings.
“I’ll still go to work, still help people,” she said.
And as for that 49th anniversary?
“I might make him take me out to dinner,” she said.
