STERLING VA: (Rocktown Now) – An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for parts of central Virginia, with forecasters warning of potentially life-threatening wind chills beginning Monday evening. The alert is in effect from 7 p.m. Monday through 11 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
Residents in Albemarle, Nelson, Augusta, and Rockingham counties should prepare for wind chills that could plunge to 15 degrees below zero, creating hazardous conditions for anyone exposed to the cold for even short periods.
Meteorologists caution that such extreme cold significantly increases the risk of frostbite and hypothermia, particularly for individuals without adequate protection. Unprotected skin may become damaged within minutes. The prolonged stretch of subfreezing temperatures may also lead to burst water pipes, especially in uninsulated or exposed areas
Forecasters say the region will remain under the influence of an Arctic airmass through the end of the week, and additional cold-weather alerts may be issued as conditions evolve.
Officials urge the public to take precautions, including dressing in multiple layers and covering exposed skin with hats, gloves, and face protection. Pet owners are advised to keep animals indoors as much as possible and to ensure outdoor animals have warm shelter, food, and access to unfrozen water.
