HOUSTON (JMU Athletics) – James Madison offensive lineman Zach Greenberg has been selected to the 2026 Lombardi Award Preseason Watch List, spotlighting 54 of the nation’s top linemen and linebackers from across all FBS conferences and independents, as announced by the Rotary Club of Houston and Lombardi Award™ Committee on Tuesday afternoon.
Celebrating its 53rd anniversary, the Lombardi Award™ has been presented in Houston, Texas, since its establishment in 1970. The 2026 award dinner is scheduled for December 9, 2026, with net proceeds from gala sponsorships, table sales and surrounding events dedicated to supporting cancer research.
Greenberg – a Preseason First Team All-Sun Belt honoree – was named to the Outland Trophy Watch List last week, which highlights the best FBS interior linemen. Joining him from the Sun Belt Conference on the Lombardi Award Preseason Watch List was Troy edge Donnie Smith.
The Livingston, N.J. native was part of an offensive line that helped JMU rank top 30 in the FBS in seven categories, which included ranking ninth in scoring (37.1 ppg) and 15th in total offense (452.6 ypg).
This year’s list features a balanced mix of offensive and defensive standouts, from dominant tackles and guards to elite linebackers and ends, representing powerhouse programs nationwide. With strong showings from the SEC (16), Big Ten (17), Big 12 (6), and ACC (4), plus top talent from other conferences, the watchlist celebrates excellence across college football.
The Lombardi Award™ was established in 1970 by the Rotary Club of Houston in memory of legendary coach Vince Lombardi. It is presented to outstanding linemen and linebackers who best epitomize his values of leadership, courage, performance, and discipline on and off the field. Furthermore, the watchlist includes players who are consistently showing the values of strength, agility, and football acumen in their respective positions.
