JMU Softball loses first game at Clearwater to No. 3 Tennessee

CLEARWATER, Fla. (JMU Athletics) – James Madison softball fell to No. 3 Tennessee, 11-0, on Friday evening at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.  The Dukes move to 2–2 on the season, while the Lady Vols remain unbeaten at 6–0.

Graduate student Kylee Gleason paced JMU offensively, going 2-for-3, accounting for half of the Dukes’ four total hits.

How It Happened
Fourth Inning:
• Tennessee broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning, scoring three runs with four hits in the frame.
• Emma Clarke used a double to get the Lady Vols on the board, before a double steal and a run-scoring single netted runs for a 3-0 lead.

Fifth Inning:
• Tennessee extended its lead after a wild pitch allowed a run to score, followed by a two-RBI single up the middle from Mariah Rutan to make it 6–0.

Sixth Inning:
• Ella Dodge lined an RBI double down the right-field line, bringing home another run for a 7-0 score.

Seventh Inning:
• The Lady Vols capped the scoring as Bella Faw delivered a two-RBI single to center, Gabby Leach added an RBI double down the right-field line and McCall Sims drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly to center.

Game Notes
• Taylor Johnson started in the circle and set a new career-high in strikeouts with four, while being an out away from hitting her career-high in innings pitched. She pitched 3.2 innings.

Up Next
The Dukes will continue play at the Shriners Children’s Invitational against No. 1 Texas Tech, with first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
