Spring Practice or Post Season Play?

Saturday’s Spring Practice for JMU Football looked and felt like December instead of April. Coming off of Friday’s warmer and windy day, Saturday was cold and featured a steady snow the entire practice. The snow didn’t lay on surfaces, but it sure came down.

Cole Johnson, Ben DiNucci, Gage Moloney and Hunter Etheridge each completed throws into tight windows. Johnson, DiNucci & Moloney all connected on throws down the field with their backs up against the goal line. Kyndel Dean, Josh Sims, Jake Brown and Daniel Adu continue to raise the bar of their play at WR with either TD catches, along the sideline for a first down, or in traffic. Tight End Clayton Cheatham was also a popular target for the Quarterbacks and Mack Cullen pulled in a nice “deeper ball” grab in the redzone.

The cross training for the O-Line is not only good for the offensive guys, but the D-Line is also getting stronger from the rotating players being in there. Ron’Dell Carter told me he’s pleased with the play of the D-Line and that’s in part to the O-Line getting stronger and showing more depth.

Speaking of the D-Line, Carter, along with John Daka and Wake Forest transfer Paris Black displayed impressive plays and leadership for a young unit on Saturday. Jimmy Moreland continues to prove he’ll not only worry Offensive Coordinators with his play on defense, but Special Teams coaches will have to make sure they account for #6, who came up with a nice special teams block on Saturday.

It was also Junior Day on Saturday, with a good number of High School Juniors and their parents on hand to watch practice and talk with coaches afterward. The steady flow of social media posts about the visits seem to prove many were impressed with JMU.

All of the players are ready for the spring game Saturday at 1pm at Bridgeforth Stadium. There’s no admission and the game will be carried on the air in Harrisonburg on ESPN Radio- 101.3 FM/1360 AM starting at 12:30.
